The story behind this site

Hey. I’m Justin.

3 kids under 5. Building 3 businesses with my wife. Some days I’m winning. Most days I’m learning.

I’ve filmed 350+ weddings in the last 12 years out of Morris Plains, NJ, with my wife Steph. Then we had kids. And I realized two things at once.

One — the skills that pay my mortgage translate clumsily to filming my own family. Weddings have light, structure, and a bride who shows up on time. Toddlers don’t.

Two — almost everything written online about “dad gear” is written by people who don’t actually shoot. Spec sheets. Affiliate rankings. Nobody on the floor of a reception at 11pm trying to capture a grandparent dance on the first take.

So I started writing. This is where it lives.

tone.dad is for dads who want the years to mean something on film. Written by a working filmmaker. Tested on real shoots. Honest when the gear isn’t worth it.

By the numbers

What 12 years looks like.

Rough tally as of this month. I’ll keep this honest.

Hill I’ll die on
audio matters more than camera

p.s. The numbers tick up when you scroll. I’m not trying to impress you — I’m trying to earn your inbox.

What you’ll find here.

  • Gear reviews for cameras, lenses, audio, lighting — the stuff I actually use, not the stuff Amazon sent me.
  • Technique guides adapted from 12 years of wedding work. How to hold the camera. How to frame a moment. How to shoot for editing later.
  • Dad tech — the home audio, storage, backup, and everyday tools I recommend for my own family. Same filter: does it earn its place?
  • A Sunday email that goes deeper than any blog post.

What you won’t.

  • Listicles generated by someone who’s never held the camera.
  • “Best of 2026” roundups ranked by affiliate payout.
  • Spec-sheet reviews with no real shooting.
  • The phrase “game-changing.”

The other things I do.

If you got pointed here from one of my other businesses — welcome. The short map:

  • Tonemedia — wedding videography. The revenue engine. 12 years in.
  • Noblepost — post-production for wedding filmmakers who want a luxury edit, done right.
  • Tonehomes — helping couples find homes, community, and friendships on purpose.

One more thing.

I don’t want this to be a perfect, polished feed.

I’d rather show what’s real. What’s working. What’s not. The gear I bought that didn’t earn its place. The habit that actually changed the footage. The Tuesday afternoon where I pulled the camera out because the kids were doing something I wanted to remember.

If that’s useful to you, stay. The Sunday email is where I go deeper.

If it’s not, I’d rather hear why than have you quietly leave. Hit me at justin@tone.dad.
