Disclosure.
Plain-English version of how this site makes money and how I think about my relationship to you.
Affiliate links.
Some of the links to gear on this site are affiliate links — meaning if you click through and buy, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. Primarily these are Amazon Associates links, B&H Photo partner links, and direct manufacturer affiliate programs.
What that does, and doesn’t, mean.
It doesn’t mean I recommend things because they pay more. The commission rate has zero influence on what makes the short list. I’ve turned down recommending cameras with higher payouts because they’re the wrong call for the audience. If I recommend something, it’s because I’ve used it, or I’d use it, or a trusted colleague whose work I respect has used it.
It does mean I try to keep the site sustainable. If you’ve found a recommendation here useful and you’re going to buy the thing anyway, using the link is a small way to support the work.
Sponsored content.
If a post is sponsored — meaning a brand paid to be featured — it will be clearly labeled at the top of the piece and in the URL. This is rare. I decline most offers.
Gifted gear.
Occasionally manufacturers send gear for review. When they do, I say so in the review. Receiving it does not guarantee a positive write-up, and multiple pieces of gifted gear have been reviewed unfavorably or not at all.
My promise.
If something’s not worth buying, I’ll say so — or I won’t write about it. The trust of the person reading is worth more than any single commission. This is a long game, and I plan to still be writing this site ten years from now.
